What is Wordpress?

You may be wondering, what is wordpress and how to use wordpress to create a website. Wordpress is a publishing platform that is easy to use and has been responsible for 100s of millions of blogs and websites on the web. If you don't know what it is, here is an example of a wordpress blog.

Simply speaking it makes web designers obsolete by making it simple to create a blog or website with a variety of free themes to choice from.

Back in 2003 Wordpress opened up as a simple blog hosting network.

It allowed everyone to edit and add to the variety of different codes available. This open network policy means that it has been worked on by millions of programmers for free online and it has evolved into much more than a blogging platform.

Wordpress is still, for the most part a blog creation tool. But it can be easily managed in order to create various online websites. Allowing one or multiple people to edit the site and basically giving you a variety of different options.

The program also has a very professional look to it making it ideal for large companies such as The New York Times as well as small individuals get their stuff on the web.

So, now that you know a little bit about it let’s look at how to use Wordpress to set up a site. Wordpress itself is free, and there are a couple options for using it.

Wordpress.com

Wordpress.com is the network that will allow you to set up a free blog in seconds flat. It is just as easy as creating a Facebook profile or a twitter account.

You simply fill out your information then confirm your email and you are ready to start publishing your content on the web.

This is a great way just to get published online, but as far as starting a business, there are several disadvantages.

For one thing your blog will appear as part of wordpress.com. If your blog is called MarrysWorld then the URL would be MarrysWorld.wordpress.com not MarrysWord.com.

This loses you some credibility if you are trying to sell something or come across as an authority.

Wordpress.org

Another way to use wordpress is to download the script from wordpress.org and upload it to your web host. For this you need a webhost and a domain name that is able to manage it. Here are the qualifications a web host must meet.

Once it is set up it is easily managed and can be updated anywhere with internet access. You can either pay someone to set it up for you or do it yourself.

If you do it yourself here is a good step by step that can help you get started. (click on the next slide when you are ready)
