Freelance Writing Tips
Here are some freelance writing tips if you are interested in starting a freelance writing business or are just looking for some employment in the freelance writing world.
1. Have a “Work Place”
Every work at home job needs a “work place” and a “house place.” A personal office would be ideal, but if you don’t have one just try to find some place where you can go when you say you are going to work.
Having a specific work place shifts your mindset from, “It’s a lazy day” to, “Ok, it’s time to get down to business.”
2. Manage Your Time
If you are going to be working at home you are going to have to manage your time. It is very easy to start the day full of energy and then wind up saying, “It’s 7 O’clock, I didn’t get anything done” later on.
Take a piece of paper and plan your day, this way you know exactly what you are going to accomplish during that day and you have a specific time to accomplish it.
3. Don’t Sell Yourself Short
A lot of the freelance writing market in engaged in, “penny articles” These are articles where writers agree to write for a fraction of what they should. If you don’t want to be the person working 50 hours a week and struggling to make $1,000 a month take your time evaluating a project.
People will still pay good money for high quality work, so figure out the minimum freelance writing rates that you would be willing to accept and then write quality articles for that price.
4. Be Professional
Be professional in your work, do your research and write top of the line pages. Also remember to meet your deadlines! Taking these steps will give you a good reputation and hopefully even bring you some repeat work from the employer.
5. Follow Up
After you have completed a project follow up with them. Send them a nice little thank you email and tell them that you would be willing to work with them in the future. You might not get work right away, but you could get the client thinking about you next time they need to have something written for them in the future.
6. Plan For Your Future
Most freelance writers will only write for money up front. It makes sense; you write a $15 article you should get paid $15.
But don’t knock sites like Hubpages, Squidoo, and Knol which place ads on their site and pay you a portion of the ad revenues your articles generate.
While you may only make around $.50 or so a month with an article on Hubpages those articles add up in bulk and pay you forever, unlike the $15 articles which will come and go.
One of the best freelance writing tips I can give you is starting your own blog or website. Some freelancers consider blogs to be good advertisements as a freelancer, but if you market it right they can make you a lot more money than writing for someone else over the long term.
The future is coming so prepare for it, just one of my freelance writing tips.
7. Get Out
Sometimes one of the best freelance writing tips I can give you is to get out of the house. I’ve spent many a day’s typing away on my home computer and it takes its toll on you. You need to get out and do stuff every once in a while. Either that or you could stay in and play the; “let’s see how long I can keep my sanity game.”
Just get out of the house and play golf, go to a play in a poker tournament, go on dates, or whatever it is you like you do. The important thing is to get out and associate with other people.
We do need social interaction in life; don’t give all 7 days in the week to your computer.
