What freelance writing rates can you actually expect as a writer? This is difficult to answer because every case is different. Here are some tips on what to consider when deciding how much to charge.

• What is Your experience?
• Are You an Expert?
• How Much Work is involved?
• What are your needs?
• What is their budget?
• How much is it worth to them?

What is your experience?

Obviously the less experience you have as a writer or an expert the less you will be able to get. When you are just starting out it might be a good idea to do the lower paying jobs just to build your portfolio a little bit.

Once you get some jobs done then you will have something to show your potential future employers.

Are You An Expert?

Think about what you are an expert in. Then go out and write about it. If you can prove that you are an expert in your field then you can ask for more.

How Much Work is involved?

Are you simply writing an article? Or do you have to create graphs, pictures, and maybe even create an eBook. The more work that is involved in the project the more time it will take and the more you should charge.

What are Your Needs?

How much do you need to run your business and take care of your living expenses? If you are doing it full time you have to ask for more money than if you where just doing it as a part time hobby. I suggest you take a look at what you expect to get out of it and how much you need to earn an hour. Then base your freelance writing rates off that.

If you can’t find a buyer willing to pay you $10,000 a word then maybe your price is too high and you should reexamine what you expect.

How Much Will it Help Them?

To every client a well written article is worth a different amount. I run a couple of different websites and I would never pay $30 for an article. Many of the big get paid to write online sites would also reject such a large amount. But that is because it simply isn't worth $30 to pay for an article that might only bring in $.50 a month.

However, if you are writing for a Magazine or an eBook where the potential payoff is much higher, that is a different story.

How Much Can They Afford?

Customers might not say their budget, but you can always ask. If a client is willing and able to pay $40 an article then let them pay it. On the other hand if they are only willing to pay $10 an article then you have to decide if that is worth your time or not.
