The Blogging Phenomenon Explained

The Blogging phenomenon threatens to destroy the traditional newspaper and to change the way the world works. But why so? In 1999 Cartmeton Barrett published a list of the 23 Blogs know to Exist at the time. Ten years later in 2009 that number was estimated to be 126 million.

What is the reason behind this rapid growth? For starters it is an easy way to get published online. Thanks to programs like Blogger anyone can set up a blog and start writing about their day.

But just because something is easy doesn’t mean it will become popular. There are 7 major factors that I can see which have made blogging so popular and can give some insight on the psychology of blogging.

1. Get Things Off Your Chest

Blogs in some respect became popular for the same reason Diaries became popular. Stuff happens and sometimes we need to get it off of our chest by writing it down.

2. A Voice For Everyone

As humans we need to be heard, we just want to reach as many people as possible. With the online world we can do that. It is a nice feeling when you can express your own opinions and potentially have those opinions read by millions of people.

In a world where we are so used to being told what to do and what to believe it is nice to have your own say and your own without worry about how others will react. Nobody is judging you online and telling you what to write. You are free to say what you want and how you feel about anything in life. Blogging is freedom.

3. Stand Out

In a world with 7 billion people it is hard to separate yourself and to actually feel important. What is going to happen when you die? Will it make any difference in the world? Or will the world as a whole carry on without even noticing it.

Will anybody even remember your name 100 years after your death? It’s sad to say, but for most people the answer is no. Nobody will remember the average Joe long after they pass away and that can be hard to handle at times.

But blogs will live on. A blog is something you can create which can be read 100s of years after you are gone. The blogging phenomenon was in part caused by people wanting to express themselves and immortalize themselves so a part of them will live on to see the future.

4. Socializing With Like Minded People

Another cause of the blogging phenomenon is the need to socialize with likeminded people. We are social animals and need to communicate with people like ourselves to share our ideas and opinions.

If we don’t we risk turning into the people who just happen to be around us whether we want to turn out like them or not. If all your friends are poverty stricken citizens who sit around all day talking about how the Government is screwing us over that is who you will become yourself.

The blogging phenomenon allows us to escape from an unpleasant reality and communicate with other like minded bloggers in order to improve ourselves and reach our goals. Part of the psychology of blogging is to simply meet people even if it is not face to face.

5. More Opportunities

The blogging phenomenon has lead to more opportunities for the average Joe. People who couldn’t get published in a newspaper are suddenly able to get published on the web and can be seen by just as many people or more as a journalist for a major newspaper might.

6. Money

Some of the psychology of blogging is to go out and make money. The internet has lead to more ways to make money. If you have people coming to your blog you can sell your own products, sell advertising, or simply sell your ideas.

7. Spread Ideas

Ok, it’s time to admit it, we all have ideas and many of us want to spread those ideas out to the rest of the world. What better way of doing this then by using the power of the blogging phenomenon.

An idea on a blog post which is read by 10,000s of visitors may be written about by other bloggers and may eventually find itself in the mainstream media. Ideas can also lead to immortality the, law of attraction, theory of relativity, laws of thermodynamics, and Democracy are all great ideas that lead to a immortal men and a whole new chapter in the world.

The Blogging Phenomenon brings us back to a golden age where anyone with an idea can share it and have that idea looked upon subjectively by the entire world. The internet and blogging has changed so many things, but this is by far the most important for mankind and the biggest step in our development.
